Library Department Report

August 2005

Staffing

·         Library Pages Michelle Meyer and Lisa Bol tendered their resignations during the month.

·         Melinda Curtis and Jennifer Dykhouse were hired to fill the resulting open Library Page positions.

 

Facility

·         The staff break room floor was stripped, sealed, and refinished by the cleaning company at my request. (This service is included in our current contract.)

 

 Professional Development & Meetings

·         Meetings and workshops attended by professional staff included:

o        Monthly Library Supervisors Meeting

o        Monthly Staff Meeting for Librarians, Circulation Coordinators & Library Assistants

o        Monthly Staff Meeting for Pages – Mary Reed & Pamela Myers

·         August 10:  Book Discussion Group For Adults

o        Book:  The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

o        Facilitators:  Mary Reed and Candace Hulst

o        Guest Book Discussion Leader:  Jinny Kiel

o        Attendance:  13

 

·         Summer Reading Program for Adults (June 13 – August 06)

o        Total Registration:  110 adults

o        Participation was up 13% from 2004.

o        Total Completing the Program:  32 adults for a completion rate of 29% of those registered or 48% of those submitting at least one mini-review.

o        Adults participating in the program were challenged to read 8 books in 8 designated genres and write a mini-review for each. Those completing the program received a finisher prize and were eligible to win a grand prize or one of several second level prizes.

o        Each mini-review served as an entry in weekly prize drawings. Thus, if participants could not manage to complete the entire program, they were still eligible to win prizes.

·         A total of 377 mini-reviews were collected from 66 participants.

·         A total of 52 participants were awarded prizes from weekly drawings.

 

·         August 09:  Book Discussion Group for Teens

o        Book:  Pirates! by Celia Rees

o        Book Discussion Leader:  Jill Reyers

o        Attendance:  1

·         Special Summer Programs for Youth

o        August 03:  “Shrek” Movie Day (Ages 8 – 12)

·         Attendance:  12 children & 3 adults  (Pre-registration required)

o        “Seek The Knight” Quest (Ages 12 – 17)

·         Reward Winners:  24 young adults

 

·         Summer Reading Program for Youth  (June 13 – August 13)

o        Total Registration:  1,653 children & young adults

o     Total Completing the Program:  825 children & young adults for a 50% completion rate

o     Total Completing the “Seek the Knight” Quest: 24 young adults

o     Participants ages 3 – 12 were required to complete 6 ½ hours of reading (independently or with an adult, depending on the child’s reading level) to qualify as a finisher and receive a collection of “reading rewards” and the opportunity to enter the grand prize drawing.

·         A second level of reading rewards and another chance in the grand prize drawing were awarded to those participants who challenged themselves and achieved an additional     7 ½ hours of reading.

o     Participants ages 13 – 17 were required to read 5 books from 5 different genres to qualify as a finisher and receive a grab bag of reading reward coupons and the opportunity to enter the grand prize drawing.

·         A second chance in the grand prize drawing and additional reading rewards were offered to each participant who continued on to read 5 more books from various specified genres.

o     Total Program Attendance:

·         Preschool Story Times:  242 children and 106 adults at 4 sessions

·         Youth & Family Programs (Excluding Teen Programs):  427 children and 133 adults at 7 programs

·         Young Adults:  31 teens at 2 programs

·         Program Attendance All Programs/All Ages:  700 children & young adults at 13 programs

o     Average Program Attendance:

·         Preschool Story Time:  61 children and 26 adults per session

·         Youth & Family Programs (Excluding Teen Programs):  61 children and 19 adults per program

·         Young Adult Programs:  15 young adults per program
